Friday scent of the day 7/9 :: Now Smell This

Happy Ice Cream month! Our community project for today: tell us your favorite flavor, share a recipe if you like, and wear any perfume that you think fits the project.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

My favorite flavor is chocolate, although I’m not all that interested in plain chocolate ice cream. I like any ice cream better if you add chocolate chips, though, and I like chocolate better if there is something else added, whether fruit, coffee, nuts or spice. When I was still making ice cream regularly, one of my favorite recipes was the Vietnamese Coffee from Saveur, with about 1/2 cup of chopped chocolate thrown in the ice cream maker at the last minute.*

I never made fig ice cream, but now I’m tempted to dust off the ice cream maker and try a batch. So for today, I’m wearing Diptyque Philosykos on one arm and Imaginary Authors + Salt & Straw A Whiff of Waffle Cone on the other.

Reminder: 7/16 will be Nordic Friday…wear a fragrance inspired by, or made by a brand from, one of the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway or Sweden).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I’ll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

*I usually made the recipe with extra cardamom, extra cinnamon and 1/4 t vanilla. I also experimented with 1 cup half and half and 1 cup heavy cream, and I liked that better than 2 cups of heavy cream, and I sometimes added an extra egg yolk.

The best ice cream I ever made was from Nigel Slater’s recipe for Marmalade Chocolate Chip, which I did with 2.5 cups half & half, 5 yolks, 2.5 T sugar, and then a mix of 1 full jar of Bonne Maman marmalade plus enough Korean Yuzu tea / marmalade to make up about 440-450g. This was beyond delicious, but nobody else in my family likes marmalade and they didn’t like the ice cream either. I never made it again because I ended up eating the whole batch myself in a few days: too dangerous.
